Walls of Ibiza. A tour of modern history

establishing the limits of Dalt Vila, Ibiza wall they take centuries protecting the city from attacks maritime.

Aiboshim, the Phoenician settlement that gave rise to Ibiza was born to the 7th century B.C. However will have no news of an enclosure walled until the arrival of the Muslims in the 10th century. This first site of Madina Yabisah, as they called it in Al – Andalus, was replaced and expanded with the arrival of the Catalans in the 13th century. During this time thewall reaches more than half of the current dimensions. In 1555 begins a first renovation of the wall with Giovanni Batista Calvi, Italian engineer, that is provided with the enclosure of a more solid structure. Applying the new school, the wall becomes an area abaluartada in which each bastion renounces his own defense but defends the neighbouring. The bastions of Sant Jordi, Sant Jaume, Sant Pere, Sant Joan, Santa Tecla and San Bernat are tackled in this first phase.

In 1570 Jacobo Paleazzo Fratín is in charge of the enlargement of the wall, building the bastion of Saint Lucia, enlarging that of Sant Joan and making a new access known today by all the visitors, the door of Ses Taules. However, it will not be until the end of this century when the definitive works are rushed, this time by Antonio Saura, creating parapet and casemates.

An unexplored treasure

Despite the architectural importance of the whole, studies on the wall did not begin until 1999, coinciding with the declaration of the Walls as a World heritage site. That is why many of the data relating to the construction and evolution of the same remain undiscovered. The tour of the area is unavoidable for visitors to the island. Don’t forget your camera.
